A Student Survey was given in 2009-2010. Below are only a few comments made by students.
The Major Strength of SHAPE is:
SHAPE is a great way to help students pull up their grades drastically and improve school behavior. SHAPE started helping me immediately pull my grades up as soon as I joined. I didn’t think it was possible for me to improve so much, nor did I expect it to happen so fast.
The major strength of SHAPE is my ability to be open to others, whether it is talking about something going on with me, confronting others to benefit them, and also keying in on those who look upset or distressed.
A strength of SHAPE is that it helps kids stay or get on track and stay out of trouble. It provides an outlet for students. SHAPE also gives students a strong support system.
Having other people that will listen and being able to trust them with whatever issues you have
The Major Weakness of SHAPE is:
It is a gradual change that takes time and patience that some kids don’t have
The only weakness of SHAPE is that so few people get to do it and not everyone out there knows the true meaning of what SHAPE really is
When you don’t really trust each other, or there are kids who abuse another’s trust. It messes up the whole circle.
There are a lot of things you can get checks for doing. Even not doing good on a test can get you a check. Sometimes you can’t help what you get checks for.
SHAPE has helped me specifically in the following way:
SHAPE has helped me cope with myself and accept the things I am powerless over
I brought my grades up. I don’t get in trouble as much. I think twice. It is a class I look forward to, to relax and be able to talk about my life and feelings and knowing it won’t be spread around the school.
SHAPE has helped me realize it is not always poor me. Everyone goes through bad times and some worse than others. It helped me realize that life is no joke and life is not easy but I have to try to work my best to make everything I am powerless over okay and know there is nothing I can do about some things.
To tell my story to help me find myself and it showed me the bigger picture of my life story. SHAPE has helped me change as a person and more it made me realize what I have and the potential I have. SHAPE is your life and no bullshit. Your life is what you make it. By opening your eyes and showing you that you are not the only one, everyone goes through shit, and you have the power to make of it what you will.
What is it like to be in a SHAPE Group? How is it different from individual counseling?
It is fun and calming to be in SHAPE group. Individual counseling makes me more pissed off and it tells me what I am good at. SHAPE gives me a chance to see that I’m not the only one with problems and that people do care and want to help.
Being in a SHAPE group is supportive and helpful. You learn that whatever happened to you was not your fault and that you have nothing wrong with you. SHAPE is different from individual counseling because in individual counseling you don’t have the strength of other people there with you.
Being in a SHAPE group is different from anything I have ever been involved in. Once you sit down in your group and you realize everyone is there to get real and that everyone has feelings just like you do, it is so easy to just open up and trust your group. It’s amazing to have people who were once strangers listen to you, and it really makes you see people different because the group members are all like little counselors, listening and giving feedback.
Intense at times. It’s real, and you can tell people what’s good.
Being in a SHAPE group builds your ability to communicate well with others. It teaches you how to listen and respond. It also helps you to be open with others without playing the ‘victim’ role. In individual counseling it is more one on one and you talk mostly of yourself and what you are going through, but being in a group gives you a chance to listen to others, to give them feedback if you have it, which also helps you, although you may not even recognize
it.
What have you learned in SHAPE?
I have learned that SHAPE lets you be yourself and gives you the chance to open up and let you let yourself trust others. SHAPE should be spread across the world. I feel bad for people who have to go through life not seeing life like I do through SHAPE.
Yes, I have learned a lot in SHAPE. I learned to appreciate others and respect. To do good in class and get good grades. And to not get in trouble in school and to think of others.
I have learned that pretty much everyone has something to live for. No one has to live for nothing unless they choose to, for we all have a purpose in life. The only way to live a happy life is to live for a purpose.
Yes, I have learned stuff in SHAPE. I have learned not to blame yourself for a situation that wasn’t your fault. Life is like different courses.
What I learned in SHAPE is that I am powerless over many things in my life and there is nothing I can do to change that.
